The 25-year-old’s body was found hanging in the duct area on the second floor of a building in Malad, Mumbai. While the suspects call it a probable suicide, her family claim it to be a murder.
Police have investigated people staying in the building, including the neighbours to ascertain if there were any fights between the couple.
Deepak Phatangare, senior police inspector of Malvani police station, said in a statement, “We are probing the case, and have not given any clean chits to anyone. The fingerprints samples have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Kalina.”

Speaking about what went wrong in Arpita’s six-seven years of relationship with Pankaj, Shweta said: “It’s difficult to say such things to your immediate family. But yeah, I am getting to hear all such stuff from her friends. She wanted to settle down with him but he didn’t want to marry her and they fought over that a lot. She wanted her future with him but he wasn’t complying.”
Shweta also revealed that her family didn’t like Pankaj as he was jobless and aggressive. She had even seen him hitting Arpita. “He was jobless. And, I had even seen him hitting Arpita. Who would want his/her sister to get married to such a guy? He was so aggressive. He used to drink and lose his senses,” she said.
Compère’s death: Mumbai family wants five, including boyfriend, charged with attempt to rape
25-year-old Arpita Tiwari’s family believes her death was the result of an untoward incident, and that it was not a suicide or accident
MUMBAI Updated: Dec 15, 2017
Allegations continue to crop up in connection with the suspicious death of compère Arpita Tiwari — her family has now demanded that an attempt to rape charge be added to the FIR filed by the police.
Tiwari was found dead in a Malwani housing society hours after she and her boyfriend arrived at a friend’s flat there early on Monday. Her boyfriend Pankaj Jadhav and his friend found the body in the second floor duct between two building wings around 7.30 am.
Tiwari’s sister Shweta said the family believes her death was the result of an untoward incident. “Since the start, we have maintained that this is neither a case of suicide nor an accident. The cops are playing it safe by saying they are investigating all angles,” she said.
Shweta said her father, Triveni Tiwari, has identified five people who were in the flat at the time of his daughter’s death. “Why did the police register a case against unidentified people when we specifically named the suspects,” Shweta asked.
Of the five people, one is her boyfriend Jadhav, who the police questioned for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday. Of the others, three are tenants and one is a servant. They have also been questioned.
Shweta said her sister and Jadhav went to another place before they arrived at Manavsthal Heights, a 19-storey high-rise, around 3am on Monday. “They went to two places, and she paid the bills at both places. She would always take care of their finances. Jadhav had started becoming possessive of her when she began scaling new heights in her career,” Shweta said.
Police are yet to ascertain the sequence of events that led to the death of the 25-year-old compère. Jadhav has told the police that the group went to sleep around 4am. At 7am, one of them found the bathroom door locked and assumed Tiwari was inside. He knocked at the door 30 minutes later, and when he did not get a response, he and Jadhav opened the door using a key. They found the bathroom window open. The building manager has told the police that the two men came down and searched for Tiwari between 7.30am and 8am. Officials said Tiwari was wearing shorts and a top when her body was found.
The police have questioned 12 people so far and checked for CCTV footage of the building’s C-wing, where Tiwari and Jadhav’s friends live. However, the camera was not working there.
Tiwari had suffered severe injuries on her head, hands, shoulders, hips and legs, the police said.
The family said they had learnt recently that Tiwari’s relationship with Jadhav was not as fine as they believed it to be. The two had been dating for five years, and she had wanted to get married for the past two years, but Jadhav had kept her waiting.
“We have registered a complaint based on the father’s suspicion. We are investigating all angles, but it is too early to come to a conclusion. This is a rare case,” said an officer from Malwani police station, who did not wish to be identified.

In a shocking incident on Saturday, a youth, who is in his twenties has immolated himself at Sakur Basti railway station. Surprisingly, none of the passengers nor any GRP official come forward to his rescue though. Instead, they immediately got busy shooting the incident on their mobile phones. The deceased, an unidentified Sikh youth, wearing a turban, squirmed for about 10 minutes after the act of immolation before eventually breathing his last on the spot.
The incident took place at around 6pm on Saturday, after the youth had reportedly roamed around the railway track of Sakur Basti for more than an hour or so. “He looked depressed while he was roaming on and off the track.
His act drew all attention only after he ended up taking out a bottle of kerosene from his bag and poured on his own body. After only a few seconds, he lit up a match stick and set himself on fire,” informed an officer of GRP, Sarai Rohilla station.
The passengers present on the platform called the GRP.
However, the fire by then had engulfed his body. The helpless youth cried for help but none came forward to douse the flame. The body remained at the station for at least three hours – thanks to a blame game played by the GRP and the Delhi Police over the jurisdiction of the area. When contacted, Aslam Khan, DCP (Northwest) said that the incident took place on the railway track and therefore it was a case of the GRP.
Parvej Ahmad, DCP, Railway, however contradicted him and said that the case will be looked after by the local police and also that the body was not found on the track. The body was finally taken to the mortuary by the GRP. “We are waiting for the claimant of the body. We will then perform a post-mortem,” an official said
