Alappuzha: Ending almost a week of mystery over the murder of NRI Joy V. John, police on Monday formalised the arrest of his son Sherin John, who was detained on Saturday. He was produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court,  Chengannur, by evening and was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.

District police chief P. Ashok Kumar said he confessed in the wee hours of Monday at the end of two days of constant interrogation that he shot his father dead, and the motive was enmity over property sharing. He explained how he killed him, after giving contradictory statements letting his interrogators not to arrive at a conclusion for last two days.

“The murder was premeditated,” the officer said. He was not in good terms with his father for years. He had long parted ways with the family, and he was living alone in Chengannur. When Mr John along with his wife and elder children came home last week from the US on a vacation, the two had an altercation over properties.

He always feared he would be left out during partition, and it was growing in him. He killed him on Thursday while they were returning from Thiruvananthapuram after repairing his car.

He shot at his father with a pistol that he stole from him. He had always kept a rifle in his possession, and he did not know it was missing. He fired four times while the car reached Mulakuzha near Chengannur. After that, he took pictures of the body on his mobile phone and brought it to the godown owned by the deceased in Chengannur. He cut the body into six pieces, after his attempts to burn the corpse failed, and bundled into gunny sacks.

The limbs were dumped in Pampa River. The torso and the head were recovered from different places. While the head was unearthed from a dump yard in Veloor near Changanassery, a portion of the leg was found from the Pampa River. Mr John took his son on the trip to the state capital as his driver was on leave, the police said.

In a gruesome incident of patricide over property dispute, a 36-year-old IT professional has allegedly shot dead his NRI father, cut his body into pieces and dumped them at various locations in Chengannur, Kerala.

Police said Sherin John, working with a company in IT hub Technopark, was arrested after he confessed that he had killed his father, Joy V John, 68, last week.

John who was living in the US for the last three decades, was visiting his ancestral home in Kerala, when he was murdered, police said.

Based on Sherin’s statement, police carried out a search in various places and recovered portions of a limb, head and some other body parts, believed to be that of Joy.

The recovered body parts will be sent for DNA testing and other scientific analysis.

“As per our preliminary investigation, property dispute between the father and son had led to the murder,” Alappuzha District police chief B Asok Kumar told PTI.

According to a report in The NEWS Minute, Sherin allegedly shot his father four times with an American-made revolver that he stole from Joy.

He then laid out his father’s body in the back seat and covers it with a towel, collapsing the seat on top of him.

Afterwards, he reportedly drove into the basement of their multi-storeyed shopping complex in Chengannur town, laid the body out on a tin sheet, collected some inflammable materials, poured petrol and lit a fire.

Realising that the fire could go out of hand, he doused it.

Sherin is then said to have chopped the body parts into six pieces by separating the head and all the four limbs from the torso, packed each separately in plastic sacks and dumped them one by one at various places.

Joy had gone missing since last Wednesday after he had gone out with Sherin to repair their car’s air conditioner.

As her husband and son did not return, Joy’s wife Mariamma lodged a missing persons complaint with the police.

During interrogation, Sherin confessed to committing the crime, police said, adding that he had been booked for IPC offences including murder and destruction of evidences.

What makes the tragic turn of events more gruesome is the fact that Sherin has shown absolutely no remorse over the whole incident and has even admitted to photographing his father’s severed remains using his tablet.

Kerala techie kills father, chops body into six pieces

Property dispute may be motive behind the murder, say police.

An IT professional has been arrested on charges of shooting his NRI father to death, chopping his body into six pieces and dumping them at different places.

The accused has been identified as Sherin V Joy (39), a native of Chengannur in Alappuzha district. An engineering graduate, he worked with a firm at Technopark here.

Sherin allegedly killed his father Joy V John (68), who was settled in Texas for almost three decades, over a property dispute, said police. The deceased had come to Chengannur two weeks ago along with his wife Mariyamma, a nurse, and a younger son, who is a doctor.

Sherin too was brought up in the US and had returned to Kerala in 2010 after his marriage, which broke up a year later.

On May 25, the father and son had a heated argument apparently over rent collected from one of their buildings. The fight happened during their journey back from Thiruvananthapuram after getting their car’s air-conditioner repaired, said police.

Sherin, according to the police, then used his father’s gun to fire four rounds at him.

The incident took place at a desolate place in Mulakkuzha.

Sherin later cut the body into pieces, packed them in bags and threw them away at various places during the night.

Joy later called up his mother Mariyamma and told her that his father was killed in “an accidental firing” and sought an apology. Mariyamma then informed the police, who tracked him down to a hotel in Kottayam on May 27.

Later, Sherin reportedly confessed to the crime. Police also took him to various places in Alappuzha and Kottayam districts to recover his father’s body parts. The recovered body parts would be sent for DNA test.

The police claimed that since childhood, Sherin had a strained relationship with his father, who was not willing to part with his property to help him out. John, they added, had a good relation with his two other children, both medical professionals.

The arrested youth was presented before a court, which remanded him in judicial custody.

Kerala techie murders, dismembers father over property; arrested

The police said that Joy used to beat up Sherin as a child and refused to give him his share of property.

A 36-year-old software engineer was arrested from Alapuzzha district of Kerala for allegedly murdering his father, a US-based NRI, over a property dispute. The techie, Sherin John, shot dead his 68-year-old father, Joy V John, with a stolen pistol and then attempted to burn the corpse, the police said. Then he chopped the partially burnt body into several pieces and dumped them at various spots. The police recovered Joy’s hand and legs from Pampa river while his head was found at a warehouse. Other body parts were recovered from a garbage pile in Changanacherry. The police had started the search after John confessed to the crime. The police have also recovered the pistol.

“The recovered body parts will be sent for DNA testing and other scientific analysis. As per our preliminary investigation, property dispute between the father and son had led to the murder,” Alapuzzha district police chief was quoted.

The incident had come to light when Joy’s wife Mariamma lodged a complaint with the police after he went missing last Wednesday.

Joy, who lived with Mariamma in the US, had come to his ancestral house in Alapuzzha on May 19. The police said that Joy used to beat up Sherin as a child and refused to give him his share of property. A grudge against his father finally led to the murder, the police said. Sherin was in the US till 2013. He was currently employed with an IT company in Thiruvananthapuram.
