Nephew shoots jail warder dead

First published on 08-Dec-2017
Patna: A 45-year-old warder of Beur Central Jail here was shot dead by a close relative at his official residence on the jail premises on Thursday.

The assailant, identified as Vishal Kumar Singh (21), stated to be nephew of deceased warder Santosh Kumar Singh, later shot himself dead with the same illegal firearm.

The incident occurred around 8.30am at the official quarter of the jail employees in Beur. Vishal reached his maternal uncle’s house and fired at him from point-blank range. He was rushed to Patna Medical College and Hospital, where he died during treatment. Sources close to the family said Vishal had a heated argument with Santosh over some family issues.

“Vishal whipped out a 9mm pistol and fired at his maternal uncle after he returned home after dropping his daughter at a tutorial,” said city superintendent of police (SP) (west) Rabindra Kumar.

The station house officer (SHO) of Beur police station Alok Kumar said the pistol used in the crime had been recovered with two live cartridges of 9mm bore and sent to the forensic science laboratory for ballistic examination.

A police officer posted at Beur police station said prima facie, the incident appeared to be the fallout of an illicit relationship. “The investigating officers have been told to collect evidence to substantiate this,” the police officer said.

Vishal, an undergraduate student, was stated to be a resident of Isarpura village under the jurisdiction of Ranitalab police station in Patna rural.

Earlier, he used to live with the warder’s family. “For the past 15 days, Vishal had not visited his maternal uncle’s house. On Thursday, he suddenly reached the house and killed his maternal uncle,” the SHO said, adding that the reason behind the murder was yet to be ascertained.

Earlier, city SP (west) Rabindra said it was being ascertained how Vishal procured the US-made weapon illegally and how it reached the high-security region. The family members of both the victims were not in a condition to get their statements recorded
