PATNA: A special investigating team (SIT) has been formed by officiating Patna SSP D Amarkesh to probe the murder of businessman Jitendra Kumar Gandhi (45), who was shot on Jagdeo Path in the city around 10pm on Tuesday.

The incident took place near a Bihar Military Police camp when Gandhi along with his son Abhiyu Raj (24) was riding a bike on their way back home at Pethia Bazaar in Phulwari Sharif after downing the shutters of their Khadim footwear showroom. The deceased also owned a garment and a confectionery shops in the state capital.

Amarkesh said the SIT would be headed by DSP (secretariat) Ashok Kumar and comrise of Phulwarisharif SDPO Ramakant, Airport police station SHO Deo Kumar, Phulwarisharif police station SHO Dharmendra Kumar and two other officers.
“The reason for the crime is yet to be ascertained,” the officiating SSP said and quoted Gandhi’s son as having told police that four masked criminals on two bikes covered them from both sides and one of them tried to snatch a bag from Abhiyu.

Gandhi scolded the criminals after which he was shot in the neck from close range, Amarkesh said and added the son was carrying a pistol with which he opened a fire on the fleeing criminals. Police have recovered an empty cartridge from the spot which was perhaps fired by the son, the officiating SSP said, adding it was being verified if the Gandhis’ pistol was licensed or not.

Abhiyu told police the bag, which was attempted to be snatched, contained Rs 40,000.

The incident has sent shock waves among the businessmen who have demanded adequate security for traders in the state. “The incident is frightening as the criminals dared commit the murder on a busy road in the state capital,” said a trader who had reached the hospital after the killing
